Apply it on top of standard masking products, which are used to protect the environment around the area to be repaired and to create a smooth painting edge.

3M Smooth Transition Tape is 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide and has a raised ridge which is the only adhesive covered part that is applied to the surface. The remaining raised portion of the tape allows primers or paint to flow naturally together when the area is spray painted. Thereby, an almost invisible paint border is created between the existing paint and the new one, without requiring any special effort on the part of the car refinisher. And it results in much less rework compared to regular tape/paper or folded tape. 3M Smooth Transition Tape is also suitable for stone chip coating.
