What should you consider when buying a backplate?
32mm rear disc, 50mm rear disc, 75mm rear disc, 125mm rear disc, 150mm rear disc. Each size is designed for specific polishing tasks, and the choice depends on the area you are working on and the precision you need.
1. Thread size
The thread size of your backing disc must match the thread size of your polisher. Common thread sizes include M14 and 5/16"-24. It is important to ensure that the thread matches in order to achieve a secure and stable installation.
2. Diameter of the back disc
The choice of diameter of the back disc depends on the polishing area:
32mm and 50mm: Ideal for precision work and small areas, such as side mirrors, corners and edges.
75mm: Good for medium-sized areas and details where some precision is still required.
125mm and 150mm: Perfect for larger surfaces, such as car panels, where you want an even and fast polishing.
3. Thickness
The thickness of the back disc can affect flexibility and polishing precision:
Thin Back Discs: Provides more flexibility and is ideal for contoured and uneven surfaces.
Thicker rear discs: Offers stability and is better for flat and large surfaces where even pressure distribution is important.
4. Mounting the polishing pad
How you mount the polishing pad on the backing pad can affect the effectiveness of your polishing:
Velcro (also referred to as Grip / Hook and Loop): The most common mounting method, providing easy and quick replacement of polishing pads. Make sure both the backing pad and polishing pad have compatible velcro surfaces.
Self-adhesive (PSA): Some polishing pads are self-adhesive, which can provide a more permanent fit, but requires care when replacing to avoid damage to the backing plate.
