Can you paint wheels?
Yes, you can paint wheels! Painting rims is an excellent way to improve the appearance of your vehicle and protect them from further damage. To ensure a durable result, it is important to follow some basic guidelines when we talk about painting, regardless of whether it is a spray can or with a spray gun.
However, we should mention that you will probably achieve the best results with a professional car refinisher, as painting is a craft and they do it every day and access to professional equipment that can ensure your rims look great. But if you have the courage and desire to give your rims new life yourself, you will find the necessary products with us.
Short guide to Painting Rims
1. Preparation of the Surface
Cleaning: Start by cleaning the rims thoroughly to remove dirt, grease and old chemicals. Use a degreaser and a brush to ensure all impurities are removed.
Sanding: Sand the surface lightly with fine sandpaper (320-400 grit) to create a rough surface that helps the paint adhere better. Finish by wiping off dust and grease.
2. Use of Primer
Before applying primer, pay attention to the material your rims are made of: steel or aluminum.
For aluminum rims, use a primer specially designed for aluminum.
For steel rims, you can use a regular primer for metal.
The primer improves the adhesion of the paint and prevents corrosion. Choose a primer that is compatible with metal surfaces.
3. Paint
When the primer is dry, you can apply the desired rim varnish. Choose a paint specially designed for rims to ensure durability and resistance to chemicals and road grime.
Apply the paint in thin, even layers to avoid runners, drips and unevenness. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
4. Final Layer
For extra protection, you should consider applying a clear coat. This provides a glossy finish and additional protection against damage and weather conditions. You can e.g. use a 2K spray which is a more durable product compared to 1K clear coat.
5. Drying
Allow the rims to dry completely before putting them back on the car. This ensures that the paint cures properly and remains durable.
