Sanding sheets are usually available 23 x 28 cm, but other sizes may be available.
Sanding belts are often for slightly coarser sanding and are available in different dimensions both in length and width, so make sure that the sanding belt fits your belt sander.
Abrasive discs/wheels are often used in conjunction with a vibrating sander or sander. The fastening can be different from the pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) or the more common "velcro" referred to as "hook-and-loop" or grip.
Sanding rolls: Are really just sanding sheets in large quantities, which are used in workshops with a large consumption of sanding paper.
Sanding sponge is typically used for narrow places or curved surfaces.
What is grain size and which should I choose?
The grit of the sandpaper is an assessment of the size of abrasive materials on the sandpaper. The higher grit number corresponds to a finer abrasive which provides a smoother surface finish. Lower grit numbers represent coarser abrasives that scrape off materials much faster.
P40-P60 Coarse. Removal of rough unevenness, painting or lacquering
P80-P120 Medium coarse. Preparation of the surface before painting or plastering
P150-P240 Medium coarse. For "ordinary" sanding/polishing of wood and metal.
P280-P400 Medium fine coarseness. Polishing/sanding of wood and metal.
P500-P600 Fine Polishing/sanding of wood and metal, removal of small scratches
P800-P1200 Very fine. "Polishing" of surfaces, removal of light scratches.
P1500-P2000 Extremely fine. For high-gloss polishing, removal of micro-scratches
P2000-P2500: These grit sizes are often used to remove very small scratches and polish surfaces. They are suitable for polishing wood, metal and lacquer.
P3000-P4000: These extremely fine grit sizes are typically used in wet sanding and for polishing automotive finishes. They are effective in achieving a mirror-gloss finish without microscopic scratches.
P5000 and above: These grain sizes are rare and usually reserved for specialized applications. They can be used for removing micro-scratches and polishing very sensitive materials.
Multiple standards for grain sizes
Several standards have been established for grain size. These standards establish not only the average grain size, but also the permissible variation from the average. The two most common are the United States CAMI (Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute, now part of the Unified Abrasives Manufacturer's Association) and the European FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) "P" grade.
