Teknodur Primer 5 Grey
About the product
Teknodur Primer 5 is a two-component qualitative, multifunctional primer for steel surfaces, where the hardener is an aliphatic isocyanate resin. Gloss Semi-matt in grey.
Special properties Teknodur Primer 5 is quick-drying and acts as a surface filler that creates a dense and uniform paint film. It can be used as a primer alone for high-performance topcoats. The paint layer is easy to sand, making it suitable for use in a wet-on-wet system with a polyurethane topcoat.
Mixing ratio
Base (comp. A): 9 parts by volume
Hardener (comp. B): TEKNODUR PRIMER 5 HARDENER 1 part by volume
Thinner Standard thinners: TEKNOSOLV 9521 and TEKNOSOLV 9526 (not aromatic)
Shelf life at +23 °C (pot life) 6 hours
Pretreatment
The surfaces are cleaned of impurities that can be harmful to the surface treatment and the paint. In addition, water-soluble salts are removed by suitable methods. The surfaces of the various materials are pretreated as follows.
STEEL SURFACES: Remove scale and rust by sandblasting to degree of cleanliness SA 2½ (standard ISO 8501-1). If the surface is roughened on thin sheets, adhesion is improved.
ZINC SURFACES: Hot-dip galvanized steel structures that are exposed to the weather can be painted if the surface is sandblasted (SaS), so that the entire surface becomes matt. Suitable blowing agents are e.g. aluminum oxide and natural sand. In h.t. According to ISO standard 12944-5, it is not recommended to paint galvanized structures that are to be immersed in water or soil. When painting such objects, contact Teknos separately. Sandblasting (SaS) is recommended for new galvanized thin sheet constructions.
OLD PAINTED SURFACES SUITABLE FOR OVERCOATING: Impurities that can be harmful to the application of the paint (eg grease and salts) are removed. The surfaces must be dry and clean. Old, painted surfaces that have exceeded the maximum paintability must be roughened. Pre-treatment of damaged parts is carried out according to the requirements for surface and maintenance painting.
POLYESTER PUTTY SURFACES: Sand the surfaces dry (P80 or P120) and remove dust with thinner. Choose the place and time for the treatment, taking into account that the pre-treated surface does not become dirty or damp before the subsequent treatment.
Shop primer KORRO E Epoxy shop primer can be used if necessary
Mixing components Consider the pot life of the mixture when calculating the amount to be mixed at one time. Before starting the painting, base and hardener are mixed in the right ratio. Carefully stir down to the bottom of the container. Inadequate stirring or incorrect mixing ratio results in insufficient curing and poorer film properties.
Application conditions The surface to be painted must be dry. During application and drying, the temperature of the air, the surface and the paint must be above +5 °C and the relative humidity below 80%. In addition, the temperature of the surface and the paint must be at least 3 °C above the dew point of the air.
Application
Stir the paint carefully before use. If the paint is used as a normal surface filler (for conventional spraying), it is diluted 10-20% with TEKNOSOLV 9521 or TEKNOSOLV 9526. Depending on the desired layer thickness, the paint is applied in 1-2 layers. Dry layer thickness will then be 40-100 μm. The paint can be sanded when it is dry (dry sanding P280/P320, wet sanding P600/P800).
If a thicker layer is desired, the paint can also be applied undiluted. Here the max. wet layer thickness 500 μm (approx. 220 μm dry film), which must not be applied all at once but preferably with 3-4 applications.
For refreshing, TEKNODUR PRIMER 5 can be used as a wet-on-wet primer. It is diluted 25% with TEKNOSOLV 9521 or TEKNOSOLV 9526. Apply a layer of normal layer thickness (dry film approx. 25 μm). Let the paint dry for 15 min., then apply a polyurethane topcoat, e.g. one from the TEKNODUR series by spraying. The AQUATOP series is used for wooden surfaces.
Apply by conventional or airless spraying (nozzle 0.013 – 0.018") or by brush.
The hardener and the finished paint mixture contain isocyanates. In poorly ventilated rooms and especially when spraying, the use of a fresh air mask is recommended. For short or temporary work, a mask with an A2-P2 filter can be used. So the eyes and face are protected.
The hardener should be opened with care, as excess pressure may occur during storage.
