Thinner and hardener

Hardener and thinner are important when you start mixing paint. A thinner is used to regulate viscosity and evaporation rate in putty, paint, primer, filler or clear coat. The properties of a hardener are often to ensure that the product dries up after application and forms a durable closed surface. Note certain products may have a dedicated hardener and thinner.

When are hardeners and thinners used in paint?

Thinner and hardener are two different additive materials that can be added to the paint if it has been developed for it. If you are faced with or have purchased a primer/primer, basecoat/auto paint, or clearcoat which is two-component, then this means that you need an additional component to make the product "complete". A hardener will activate the drying/curing process and a thinner is used to regulate the application properties. You will always be able to find the conditions in the technical data sheet. Note that thinner and hardener each have their own purpose when used in paint and cannot be substituted for each other.

Thinner for paint

Thinner is added to paint to reduce its viscosity or thickness. This makes the paint easier to apply, improves its flow and leveling properties, and helps it dry faster. Thinner is typically used with oil-based paints or some water-based paints, such as latex or acrylic paints, depending on the base of the paint and the desired consistency.

Hardener for paint and car varnish

Conversely, hardener is an additive used to improve the durability and hardness of the paint. It is typically used in automotive and industrial applications where a durable finish is required. Hardener must be added for two-component paint systems, which consist of a base coat and a hardener that is mixed in just before application. The hardener chemically reacts with the base coat to create a durable finish that is resistant to scratches, chemicals and other wear and tear.

Mixing ratio - follow the manufacturer's instructions

The ratio between paint, hardener and thinner is determined by the manufacturer and can vary according to the type of paint and the environment in which the paint is applied. It is therefore important to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific type of paint used, as well as the recommended type of thinner or solvent to be used. Using the wrong type of thinner or solvent can adversely affect the quality of the paint and can even damage the surface being painted.
