Topcoat
Topcoat is also known as single-stage, topcoats deliver color and gloss in one product. Because of this, topcoats don’t need an additional clearcoat. They are usually only available in solid colours.

What is a topcoat?
In our context, a topcoat simply refers to the outermost covering and finishing of a paint job and may often be referred to as one coat or single stage paint, because topcoats are the final coats for use over primers or fillers. Topcoats are formulated to provide good adherence to the undercoat, the desired appearance (color, gloss, structure) to the painted unit, additional protection from the weather, and aid in other performance requirements.
The topcoat helps furthermore to protect the structure and the underlying layers from aggressive agents. Applying a topcoat gives painted surfaces an appealing and beautiful outlook.
Topcoats: Do I need a Primer underneath?
Primers and topcoats have different functions and should not be seen as alternatives to each other. Primers are sometimes called undercoats as they serve as a preliminary coating on materials that are to be painted. The primary difference between a primer and a topcoat is that the primer is underlying while the topcoat is the outermost layer.
If the surface is one that’s highly exposed to weather elements and water, both a primer and a topcoat is recommended to be used.
Topcoats: Which should I use?
When talking about topcoats in the automotive and industrial surface industry, the topcoat is often the only noticeable object an end customer sees. Therefore, to choose the right finishing coat for your paint project is important, try to answer the following questions when you look for your next paint topcoat:
What is the surface made of? wood, plastic, metal…
What kind of look do I want to achieve? glossy, matt…
What kind of wear does it get? hardly touched, wiped every day, lots of water…
Our team will help with making the right choice of which brand and product you should go with when it comes to choosing the right topcoat for your project.
